The Kerala unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), on Sunday re-elected its state secretary MV Govindan to the post and carried out a major overhaul of its two leadership committees, as the party's 24th state conference concluded in Kollam.
KOCHI:
The state conference, held ahead of the CPI(M) congress in Madurai in April, saw 71-year-old Taliparambu legislator Govindan — who assumed the post in August 2022 following the demise of his predecessor Kodiyeri Balakrishnan — getting unanimously elected as the state secretary, in a confirmation of his authority as the senior-most leader in the state unit after chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The senior leader is also a member of the CPI(M) politburo.
A former physical education teacher known for taking ideological classes for party workers, Govindan will lead the organisation through the local body polls scheduled for later this year and the state assembly polls next year.
