JNUSU debate: Pahalgam, Palestine take centre stage

The JNU students' union (JNUSU) presidential race reached a boiling point on Wednesday night, with candidates bringing up the Pahalgam terror attack and invoking religion as central issues during the heated debate at Jhelum ground.

A longstanding tradition in the JNU election calendar, the presidential debate drew a crowd of students and representatives from multiple organisations.

The event began at 11.30pm with drumbeats echoing across the campus, soon overtaken by resounding slogans of "Azadi" and "Lal Salaam". Posters reading "Hindu Lives Matter" also dotted the venue.

The evening got off to a shaky start due to repeated disruptions. The student election committee was forced to intervene, warning the crowd that the debate would be paused unless basic decorum was maintained.
