BJP-Cong tirade goes on as Upper House debates Constitution

NEW DELHI: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress continued to trade blows as the Rajya Sabha took up the debate on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution on Monday.
The lower House hosted the debate last week culminating with the speech by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.
Initiating the debate in the Rajya Sabha, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched a scathing attack on the Congress stalwarts including Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi saying they amended the Constitution several times with an eye only protecting their governments.
"The Congress party brazenly kept amending the Constitution to help the family and dynasty... These amendments were not to strengthen democracy but to protect those in power, the process was used to strengthen the family," Sitharaman charged.
