Hindustan Times Delhi
|March 20, 2025
One person was shot dead and three others went missing as ethnic violence between the Hmar and Zomi communities escalated late Tuesday night in Churachandpur district of Manipur, prompting an indefinite shutdown in the district on Wednesday.

IMPHAL:
Hmar and Zomi are sub-tribes of larger Kuki-Zo communities dominating the Churachandpur district.
Police reported that Lalropui Pakhumate, 53, was killed during a clash triggered after Hmars opposed a Zomi group's hoisting of their community flag. The violence followed the alleged assault of a Hmar organisation leader by a Zomi group a day earlier, further inflaming tensions.
A missing persons report was registered at the Churachandpur police station by an individual identified as T. Ginminlun on Wednesday. The missing individuals were identified as Lammuanlal, 26, Kasonmang, 26, and Lhamkhanhau, 22. The report stated that they could not contact them and that authorities were urged to track their whereabouts.
