'Inmates' clock up astonishing distance after going on the run during mass prison breakout

MORE than 130 'inmates' staged a mass breakout from Dartmoor Prison.
The Dartmoor Prison Break Ultra Challenge 2025, hosted by the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Plymouth, saw participants from across the UK and Channel Islands head to Dartmoor Prison Museum ready to make their escape from the prison's gates to see how far they could get in either six, 12, or 24 hours.
The endurance challenge tasks entrants to determine their own escape route from HMP Dartmoor, with the aim of getting the furthest distance in the set time.
At midday the sound of sirens signalled the start of the “mass breakout”, with runners dubbed absconders, delinquents and felons depending on their chosen time category scattered across the moorlands.
Hot on their heels were the event's 'wardens', members of the rescue team tasked with hunting down the escapees.
