Wheelchair-bound literacy campaigner dies battling cancer

KV Rabiya, the wheelchair-bound champion of Kerala's literacy movement, whose life journey has inspired countless people, passed away at the age of 59 on Sunday.
Born in Vellilakad village near Tirurangadi in the Malappuram district, she received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2022.
Rabiya received numerous national and international accolades, including a United Nations public service award, for her extraordinary contributions and relentless spirit.
Crippled by polio at an early age of 14 when she was in the tenth grade, she faced significant challenges in her life.
At 39, she underwent surgery to remove her breasts due to cancer, and six years later, a fall damaged her spine.
She battled severe gastrointestinal and lung problems and even survived COVID-19, which infected her twice.
