UK pledges up to £160 million for Syria's recovery

The UK on Monday said it would pledge up to £160 milion ($200 million) in humanitarian id this year to support Syria’s post-Bashar Al-Assad recovery.

“The UK will pledge up to £160 milion in criti-cal aid” at the annual EU donor drive for Syria in Brussels, the UK Foreign Office said, adding that it will “help provide Syrians with critical water, food, healthcare and education in 2095”.

The interim government in Damascus was to take part on Monday in a conference to gather aid pledges for Syria, facing the prospect of diminish-ing assistance as it struggles with humanitarian and security problems after the fall of Al-Assad.

The annual conference has been hosted by the EU since 2017 - but took place without the government of Assad, who was shunned for his brutal actions in a civil war that began in 2OIl.
