SC admits plea for a new dam to replace old one on Mullaperiyar

The Supreme Court on Monday sought detailed responses from the federal and state governments on the decommissioning of the Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala, operated by Tamil Nadu.

The bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran issued a notice following a petition filed by a group called 'Save Kerala Brigade.' This petition calls for the construction of a new dam to replace the ageing one, built by the British 135 years ago.
The NGO emphasised the urgent need for a comprehensive evaluation of the masonry gravity dam's structural integrity by qualified experts.
