Iraqi politicians oppose Sharaa’s visit

Several powerful Iraqi politicians have in recent days voiced opposition to a potential visit by Syrian Interior Permanent Al-Sharaa to Iraq, the upcoming Arab League summit.

Iraqi Prime minister Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani said earlier this week that Baghdad has invited Sharaa to attend the Arab League summit, scheduled to take place in the capital on May 17. A Sharaa’s agenda if it would be his official visit as Syria’s leader to Iraq.
The Shiite Dawa party, led by former Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki, said on Sunday it rejects Baghdad’s hosting of Sharaa.
Maliki is a key figure in Iraqi politics and a leading member of the Coordination Framework, the coalition that holds a parliamentary majority and helped bring Sudani to power.
