It was going to be local runner Hanlie Nel se eerste marathon by die Sanlam Kaapstad Marathon op Sondag, maar min het sy geweet sy sou sonder haar medalje na George terugkeer - teleurgesteld, verbysterd en hartseer.

Sy was nie die enigste een wat haar ongeloof gedeel het toe die hardlopers Sondagoggend om 05:05 die volgende boodskap ontvang het ure voordat die wedloop sou begin: “Aandag: Weens veiligheidsredes is die Sanlam Kaapstad Marathon gekanselleer. Moet asseblief NIE by die begin aanmeld nie. Die geleentheid sal NIE voortgaan nie. Verdere opdaterings sal gekommunikeer word.”

Die skielike verandering in planne het sterk emosionele reaksies ontlok van daardie hardlopers wat maande spandeer het om vir die wedloop voor te berei, sommige wat van so ver as Brasilië en Noord-Afrika gereis het in die hoop om vir groot geleenthede soos die Comrades Marathon en die Two Oceans te kwalifiseer. Hierdie keer was daar geen glorie op die gronde van een van Suid-Afrika se mees geliefde wedlope nie. In plaas daarvan het die toneel wat ontvou het soos iets uit 'n fliek gelyk, met deelnemers met groot oë wat doelloos rondgekuier het, geskok, teleurgesteld en selfs in trane.
