Prime Minister Narendra Modi's current diplomatic tour to Japan and his two day stay in China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), where he is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin for two way talks, emerges at a moment of escalating economic friction with the United States, driven by President Donald Trump's 'punitive' 50% tariffs on Indian exports.
This includes a 25% reciprocal duty plus an additional 25% levy linked to India's continued procurement of Russian oil.
