Diabetes in India - Not Just a Sugar Problem, But a Multisystem Disease
Diabetes was once considered merely a blood sugar disorder.
Today, it has evolved into a multi-organ disease affecting the heart, kidneys, and liver. Without timely intervention, diabetes can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and liver disease.
The situation in our country is particularly concerning: over 50% of diabetics have poorly controlled blood sugar, 90% are overweight, 32% develop heart attacks or strokes, 40% suffer kidney failure, 65% have fatty liver and related liver issues, while 60% have high cholesterol and another 60% live with hypertension.
This presents a truly alarming health profile for diabetic patients. Therefore, it is imperative that every person with diabetes becomes proactive - not only in controlling blood glucose, but also in preventing complications through regular monitoring and organ-specific screening.
Modern diabetes management cannot stop at controlling blood sugar levels — it must now focus on total organ protection.
The Double Burden of Diabetes and Obesity in India
India has over 100 million diabetics and more than 50 million pre-diabetics. What's even more alarming — 40% of diabetic patients are obese, and 90% of type 2 diabetes cases are associated with being overweight.
Diabetes and obesity together cause cumulative damage to the heart, kidneys, liver, eyes, and nerves — a condition now being referred to as "DIABESITY".
