THE clamour began back in January, when Ludvig Aberg teed off as an amateur at the Dubai Desert Classic.
His 70th-place finish hardly indicated a player about to send shockwaves through global golf but, fortuitously, his playing partner for the first two rounds was Edoardo Molinari.
The Italian is the stats man and a vice-captain for Luke Donald's European Ryder Cup operation. In the immediate aftermath, his message to his skipper was that he needed to keep an eye on the young Swede.
It was apt that Molinari yesterday spent more time filming Aberg than perhaps any other player during the opening practice rounds of the week; and not because of a nervousness about probably the least experienced Ryder Cup player in history, but because of the high esteem in which he holds the 23-year-old, who has not played at a Major, let alone in the cauldron of the Ryder Cup.
