Nets chat: England's new white-ball skipper Jos Buttler in conversation with Moeen Ali ahead of today's ODI against South Africa
IT HAS been a bad couple of weeks for England men's ODI team, who were back in action this afternoon looking to level the series against South Africa here in Manchester, where the weather forecast was poor.
More than that, though, it has been a bad couple of weeks for the men's ODI format, which increasingly feels marginalised. In England, the headline moment came with Ben Stokes's reluctant retirement from ODIs to manage his body in the face of an unrelenting schedule.
Stokes is committed to Test cricket, where he is England's captain, and will continue to play T20, because that is shorter, easier and, let's face it, more lucrative. England's World Cup defence is just 15 months away but Stokes has foregone the chance to be involved (for now).
