China launches 'blockade' of Taiwan with missile drills as tensions escalate with US

TENSIONS between the US and China escalated today as Beijing launched unprecedented military training exercises off the coast of Taiwan.
Following a controversial visit to the island this week by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, China conducted live "precision missile strikes" in six zones surrounding Taiwan in drills which were described as an "effective blockade".
They were seen as a direct response to the visit by Ms. Pelosi to Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own territory and has threatened to annex by force if necessary!"
Long-range armed live fire precision missile strikes were carried out on selected targets in the eastern area of the Taiwan Strait," China's People's Liberation Army said. "The expected outcome was achieved," it added. No other details were given.
