We've got the Christmas decorations out at The Gilded Saloon and a calendar full of festive treats downstairs.

- Karen Koren of the Gilded Balloon

Last Sunday we welcomed the return of Sixties on a Sunday with beloved Edinburgh band Fayne & The Cruisers playing to a sold-out crowd.

They covered everything from the Beatles to The Beach Boys, Elvis to The Shadows, Ray Charles to Roy Orbison and will be back at The Gilded Saloon on 28 December.

It was great to see the venue lit up with live music and some familiar faces from our days hosting this event at the Rose Theatre.

Building on Sunday's success, we're kicking off the festive season with drinks expert and comedy singer Anna Larkin, with her show Mighty Sips - bringing together wine tasting and musical comedy.

Just what I always wanted (not): Receive gifts gracefully

Whatever you think about Christmas-wonderful, a tyranny, excessive, irrelevant - the chances are that at some point during festivities, you will have to unwrap a present in front of the person who chose it for you, write Elizabeth Stokoe, professor of social interaction, Loughborough University, and Jessica Robles, lecturer in social psychology, Loughborough University.
