The Tyneside-based angler's effort was described as "an awesome display of speed fishing" on a night when a competitor with over 40 fish did not even make the top ten.

Ian Campbell, the organiser, said Newhaven has been consistent in catch returns over the series and added: "It is a fantastic venue that just keeps on producing."

Edinburgh-based Gordon Lyall was second with 59 fish and another Capital angler, Gordon McLeod, third with 52 fish on the night

David Cooper (Edinburgh) hooked the biggest fish, a 42cm cod, and whiting made up the bulk of the catch, but Campbell said there were also a good number of dabs and codling.

Only one point separates the top two anglers in the race for the title and McLeod's third-placed finish has moved him into the top three on fish points with Cooper, a Scotland international, only a point further behind in fifth position.

Two members of staff at the Edinburgh Angling Centre/Fishing Megastore are in the top four currently - Lyall and Campbell-but they are ineligible for the prizes on offer from the sponsors, which also include Cox & Rawle. Campbell said it looks like three of the top five will win prizes after the sixth and final round tonight on the Joppa end of Portobello Beach. Fishing from 7pm to 10pm and registration from 6pm to 6.15pm at the Bridge Street car park EH15 1TG
