ESTM PROJECT AIMS TO STOP FUTURE LANDSLIPS
Clearing the rubble from Road of Remembrance
(KENT COUNTY COUNCIL)
KENT County Council has announced plans for major engineering works to stabilise Folkestone’s Road of Remembrance in the wake of landslip that closed it down two years ago.
Since the landslip on January 27, 2024, which left part of the road buried under tonnes of soil and trees, the council has carried out extensive investigations to design a permanent solution which addresses the serious instability of the cliff and protects the road for the future.
The council intends to allocate significant funding towards the £5 million scheme in its draft budget for 2026/27. If this budget is agreed, the scheme could get under way as soon as early summer.
Peter Osborne, the authority's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Reopening the Road of Remembrance matters deeply to residents, businesses, and everyone who understands the history of this iconic route.
