IT IS ONE OF 10 SELF-PORTRAITS - CITY MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY HAS ONE OF THEM
A SELF-portrait of Derby's most famous painter, Joseph Wright, is up for auction in London this week but it doesn’t look as if it will be heading back to the city any time soon.
The painting is believed to be the last self-portrait of Wright of Derby still in private hands and one of 10 of himself he painted at different stages of his life.
Derby Museums Trust has an extensive Wright collection but only has one of the self-portraits, thought to have been painted when he was about 40. The painting up for auction dates back to 1793/4,
