NATIONAL LOTTERY HERITAGE FUND PLEDGES £4.6m FOR CASCADE RESTORATION

- By ZENA HAWLEY

ONE of Derbyshire’s best-loved water features has been thrown a lifeline after the National Lottery Heritage Fund agreed to support its restoration with a £4.6million grant.

The repair of the world famous historic cascade at Chatsworth is expected to cost around £7.5million in total but the Chatsworth House Trust has already begun raising money and estimates it will still need another £1m in the next 18 months to make up the difference.

The 325-year-old Grade I listed garden structure is currently switched off because the water had been eroding its foundations and leaking through into voids beneath and is unlikely to be switched on again before the repairs have been carried out.

A £422,000 lottery grant in 2023 helped kick-start the project overall allowing a thorough examination and survey of the structure to take place.
