Access-only crackdown sees drivers facing action as police put stop to rat run

DRIVERS illegally using an access-only Derby street could now face prosecution after a series of complaints it was being used as a rat run.
Derbyshire police's Allestree SNT (Safer Neighbourhood Team) announced they had recently taken action on several drivers who had illegally used the Kedleston Road service road following concerns raised by residents.
Police said at least 11 drivers were caught by officers and will be issued a letter of "intended prosecution for contravening the 'No Motor Vehicle' signs".
It is not clear what punishments drivers could be facing but it could be court action, a hefty fine, attending a speed awareness course or just a warning.
There are two service roads at either side of Birchover Way adjacent to the main Kedleston Road.
This is one of the area's busiest roads with the University of Derby based there and direct access to the A38.
The service roads are access-only, meaning residents can only use them to get to their homes or for essential services.
Residents living on the service road have welcomed the police action. But they said officers don’t monitor the street all the time and the issue has been going on for decades.
