THE moon has been put on a list of endangered heritage sites amid fears Elon Musk and other space adventurers could ruin it, as the Daily Star revealed yesterday. Folk at the World Monuments Fund are trying to preserve things on the surface of Earth's cratered satellite, like footprints from the 1969 Apollo landings.

But there have been some lunar ideas about the celestial body, as JAMES MOORE reveals

Hidden civilisation: In the 18th century, British astronomer Sir William Herschel - famous for identifying the planet Uranus - was convinced there was a civilisation on the moon. In the following century fellow stargazer Franz von Paula Gruithuisen, from Bavaria, reckoned he'd pinpointed cities, roads and forts through his telescope, dubbing the residents "lunarians".
