TELLY superstar Ricky Gervais feels the key to his greatest TV success was not his hilarious comedic writing - but making a dog a main character.

The comic says that his award winning sitcom After Life became the most viewed British comedy in modern times thanks to his German shepherd co-star.

Many of the most emotional scenes featured Gervais, as widower Tony, opposite dog Brandy - played by brilliant dog Anti.
