Comic Rob: That's my grandad, that is...

ON November 20, 1944, a US P-47 Thunderbolt was hit by flak while returning from a dive bombing mission over the German city of Bonn.

Its 25-year-old American pilot, Captain Robert J Bradford, died trying to escape his burning aircraft.

It's a tragedy that befell 26,000 US airmen killed in the European campaign during World War Two.

But this one has a very British link as he was the grandfather of comedy legend and author Robert Newman.

He's best known for his partnership with David Baddiel and the pair made history in 1993 when they became the first comedy act to play Wembley Arena.

One of their most famous skits saw them as elderly professors presenting History Today, which soon descended into childish, playground-style insults. "That's you, that is" became a catchphrase known across the country.
