Boss hates solo efforts

Dear James, I work in a corporate job, but feel stuck and unhappy in my role as the way I work is frowned upon.

My manager prefers people to be less assertive and to run everything by them, as well as to be more collaborative. But I'm more of a solo worker, who does speak up when I think something is not working.

When I had my last appraisal, my manager said they don't think I am a team player and that I need to change my way of operating.

I meet all my targets and do good work - is there anything I can do to show them my personality isn't wrong?
