Top lawyer: Rape trial pilot a good thing

A PILOT of juryless rape trials would have been "a good thing", a Scottish Government law officer has said.

The controversial plans for certain rape cases to be tried before a judge were dropped by Justice Secretary Angela Constance last month, after a backlash from much of the legal profession and a lack of support from MSPs.

But Solicitor General Ruth Charteris KC said it could have helped with conviction rates.
