14th Tour will be the last for the gutsy pride of Wales and he dismounts as an all-time great

THE FINAL RIDE FOR G-WIZ

GERAINT THOMAS sets off today towards a last tango in Paris to bring the curtain down on British cycling's merry dance with the Yellow Jersey.

At 39, Thomas embarks on his 14th and final Tour de France crusade with his legend among the race's all-time greats enshrined long ago.

When 'G' won the fabled maillot jaune in 2018, it was one of Welsh sport's finest hours.

He climbed every mountain like Julie Andrews in the Sound Of Music and when the going got steep, in the Alps or Pyrenees, Thomas played a peaky blinder. Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Neil Kinnock, Gareth Edwards, Robbie Savage... your compatriot has done you proud.

From John Charles to Gareth Edwards, from Lyn 'The Leap' Davies in Tokyo to Ian Woosnam trying on his Green Jacket at the Masters and Gareth Bale's five Champions League winner's medals, a proud nation's hall of fame was already well-stocked.
