ALEX Salmond was practically bankrupt when he died after defending himself in expensive court cases, it has emerged.

Lawyers instructed to wind up the ex-SNP first minister's estate have confirmed they will apply to have a “trustee in sequestration” appointed - a legal term for bankruptcy.

From 2018, he faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, including sexual assault and attempted rape.
