FOOTBALL legend Pele - the only man to the lift the World Cup three times - died last night aged 82.

The Brazilian superstar had been receiving treatment in hospital for colon cancer.

His daughter Kely Nascimento paid tribute to her father: "We are thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace.

THE world of football was last night mourning one of its most gifted players in Pele, a true superstar whose sublime skills transfixed millions of fans across the globe.

And emotional tributes came from all corners of the earth for the gentleman who once told how he was born to play the beautiful game.

The former Brazil star was the only man in history to lift the World Cup on three occasions.

But the all-conquering giant of football who brushed aside many a formidable opponent on the pitch passed away last night at the age of 82 after losing his battle with cancer.

Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo wrote: "A mere goodbye' to the eternal King Pele will never be enough to express the pain that embraces the world of football.

"He will never be forgotten and his memory will live on for ever in each of us football lovers. Rest in peace."
