New Year Fishes

THE time between Christmas and New Year always feels like a natural pause point in the fishing calendar.

It’s the perfect time to look back over the season just gone, make a few loose promises about the one ahead and maybe sneak out for a cast if the weather plays ball.

Like most years, 2025 didn't quite fish the way I expected.

Some plans came together, others were washed out by water levels, family commitments or having to work plus more than a few “definitely going to's” never made it past the group chat stage. But that's fishing, you can't guarantee anything even when there's no complications never mind trying to get a bunch of busy folk in sync.

Looking back, it’s often a short evening session, a last minute decisions to go when you really should be tidying the garage or a surprise blank saving fish that you remember most. For me the one that stood out was just an ordinary trout.
