Lord Doyle apologises for 'clear error of judgment'

Doyle campaigned for Morton when he ran as an independent candidate in 2017 a time when the councillor had been charged.

He was later appointed as the Prime Minister's director of communications and became Lord Doyle recently, despite an investigation into his links with Morton.

After an approach by the Record yesterday, Downing Street and Labour confirmed the whip had been removed from Doyle in the Lords.

It is understood Starmer wanted the issue looked at again and No10 was unaware Doyle had campaigned for Morton.
