Antarctic 'megaberg' is set to smash into huge wildlife haven

ITH cliffs higher than The Shard the UK's tallest building and a surface area twice the size of Greater London, the world's biggest iceberg is on a collision course with a remote British island.

The "megaberg", called A23a, is a haven for penguins and seals and was around 1540 square miles at its peak and weighs nearly a trillion tonnes.

After decades of being grounded on the sea floor, it recently broke free from its position north of the South Orkney Islands in the Antarctic and began drifting in the Southern Ocean.

Over the past few weeks, large slabs have started breaking off, or calving, leaving a main section measuring around 1351 square miles, roughly the size of Cornwall.

Now, it's just 173 miles from South Georgia, a British territory that is home to thousands of majestic emperor penguins, along with millions of elephant and fur seals.

And, around the world, scientists, sailors and fishers are anxiously checking satellite pictures to monitor the daily movements.
