A HIT-AND-RUN driver who injured a heavily pregnant woman and her family in a crash has been jailed for nine months.

Serial offender Murray Mitchell was banned from the road for three years as Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith told him: "You have what I'd describe as a horrific record for road traffic offending" Dundee Sheriff Court heard Mitchell already had more than 20 previous convictions when he ran through red lights and crashed at speed into the woman's car.

He had been warned by his partner not to drive, but had defied her by taking her car, before smashing into the other vehicle and making off.

Prosecutor Elaine Sym told the court: "A family with two children, aged 10 and seven, had been in the retail park, shopping.
