Financial lessons for when love isn't enough

FINANCE is not the first thing on your mind when entering romantic relationships, but a partner is often the first person we go to for help with money concerns.
-
Just over a quarter of people would turn to their loved one if they were in debt and needing support, according to research for Tesco Bank.
Nearly three in 10 (29 per cent) women would turn to their partner, compared with 24 per cent of men.
Partners are more likely to be a first port of call for adults in debt than parents (23 per cent), banks (18 per cent), friends (12 per cent), charities (nine per cent), other family members (eight per cent), or employers (four per cent), the Opinium Research survey of 2000 people shows.
Mamta Shanbhag, borrow director at Tesco Bank, said: "Being open and honest about the state of your finances can go some way to lifting any financial burden you feel on your shoulders. Managing it alone can be overwhelming, so having a support system in place, whether it's a partner, family member or friend, can provide a source of comfort.
"However, less than 20 per cent of us would turn to our bank for support, but your financial provider may have solutions that you're not aware of.
"Start by taking a look at your own provider's website or give them a call directly to discuss your situation."
With Valentine's Day next week, love is in the air. But money conversations should always be too, and in a relationship's early stages, it could prove useful later down the line.
