SHERIFF SAYS TRAGEDY WAS UNAVOIDABLE

- BY DAVID MEIKLE

THE death of a baby was not linked to conditions in a controversial hospital and could not have been avoided, a sheriff has ruled.

Sophia Smith was 12 days old when she died at Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Children after contracting a rare bacterial infection similar to MRSA, which developed into sepsis.

The youngster, who had Down's syndrome, had been transferred from the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, due to breathing difficulties.

It was then discovered that there was a problem with her heart, and her parents Matthew and Theresa were told she had also suffered a collapsed lung.
