Suspension bridge fully shut to fix newly-discovered faults

The second phase of ongoing works on Menai Suspension Bridge, pictured, led to the discovery that further essential repairs are now needed

THE Menai Suspension Bridge, connecting Anglesey to mainland North Wales, has been fully closed since Saturday afternoon for "essential maintenance work".

Welsh Government chiefs made the announcement after previously saying the repairs would allow traffic up to a 3-tonne limit (as reported in Saturday's Daily Post).

The Welsh Government Transport Department wrote on X: "Despite our best efforts, Menai Suspension Bridge will temporary close for essential maintenance work from 2pm today (October 4)."

A further Welsh Government statement said: "Despite the Welsh Government's best efforts to keep the Menai Suspension Bridge open for cars and motorcyclists, feedback from UK Highways A55 around the challenges with enforcement have led to the difficult decision to temporarily close the bridge from 14:00 on Saturday, October 4.
