Weather conditions offer good chance of 'sea of cloud' capping inversion in our highest mountains this weekend

- By ANDREW FORGRAVE Countryside and Tourism Editor

HIGH pressure is dominating the UK's weather and it's already set new October temperature records in parts of Scotland. But while areas of Britain have enjoyed sunshine, cloud remains a feature elsewhere, particularly in western areas, including Wales.

This is being caused by moisture-heavy Atlantic air becoming trapped under the high pressure system. As this moist air stagnates, it can lead to persistent cloud and fog, and the chance of drizzle in places.

In the coming days, the Met Office expects some areas to experience fog, particularly overnight and in the early morning. This isn't particularly unusual for October - but the fog could become dense and short-notice warnings are expected to be issued.

A weather phenomenon forecast this weekend is expected to magnify the effect.

Strangely, this should also create conditions that will enable people to find sunshine in Wales - providing they're prepared to head for the hills.

This meteorological event is called a capping inversion - when a layer of moist air is trapped in the atmosphere.
