MORNING walkers got a shock when they came across a sheer drop running virtually the entire length of a £14m beach.

- By ANDREW FORGRAVE

The 2ft step suddenly appeared at Rhos on Sea beach as if a large part of its had been chiselled away during the night.

"I certainly didn’t expect to see this today," said a stunned visitor to the Conwy resort. "Nature never ceases to amaze me."

The town’s sandy beach was “created” a little over three years ago as part of a coastal defence project.

One million tonnes of sand were sucked from Liverpool Bay and pumped onto the old beach to raise it by 16ft.

As well as protecting the town’s new promenade, it looked wonderful: within days the beach was embraced as part of the “Welsh Riviera” coastline which also runs past Colwyn Bay, Conwy.

It was designed as a “tideless” beach, being raised so high that it couldn't be covered by the tide.
