Sporting pushed hard in savage battle to stay top of the table

VERULAM Sporting were made to dig deep as they fought their way to a 2-1 away victory over Savages FC at the scenic Collegians Grounds in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday afternoon.
The table-topping visitors, in the Over-50s Ethekwini Masters League, began the match in their trademark high-tempo style, pressing forward and carving out an early chance.
A cross from the evergreen Tsepo Nstoane was tucked away by Nyamfu Zulu, only for celebrations to be cut short when the assistant referee's flag went up for offside.
That early disappointment set the tone for the half. Sporting's free-flowing attacking football was repeatedly stifled by a compact and well-drilled Savages defence. The smaller pitch, compared to Sporting's usual expanses, further frustrated their wing play and trademark long-range passing.
