Outrage over ex-PM's 'rewards for failure' given to Tory chums

- BY ASHLEY COWBURN

What a shower

VOTERS finally decided last July that 14 years of Tory mayhem and savage cuts was more than enough and kicked them out with a landslide victory for Labour.

But Rishi Sunak yesterday continued the Conservative delusion that they were a success in office by handing gongs to a string of his former flops.

The biggest shock was Michael Gove being made a peer after his disastrous spell as Education Secretary was branded toxic by a union chief who accused him of damaging kids' futures.

He also admitted using cocaine and was involved in a string of hated policies.

But Mr Sunak's rewards for failure did not stop there. There were knighthoods for Jeremy Hunt, James Cleverly, Grant Shapps, and Mel Stride, who all played a key part in the never-ending Tory austerity and assault on public services.

The former PM, who announced last May he was calling a general election while standing outside No10 in a downpour with no brolly, revealed the awards in his resignation honours list.

A Labour source said: "Rewarding failure is in the Tories' DNA.

"Surely it's only a matter of time before they reward Liz Truss for crashing the economy and sending mortgages spiralling, given they still refuse to apologise for it."

Lib Dem deputy leader Daisy Cooper said: "These political nominations look like an ID parade of political flunkies whose fingerprint of failure are still felt on family finances.
