Shock rise in 'corridor care' waits in our A&Es

THE number of incidents where NHS patients waited in A&E on a trolley for 24 hours or longer before being found a bed rose from 689 in 2019 to 49,000 last year.

Those over the age of 65 accounted for almost 70% of all 24-hour trolley waits. And in the most extreme cases, some patients faced waits of up to 10 days.

The Liberal Democrats obtained the figures from just 54 of 141 NHS Trusts, meaning the true number is likely to be far higher.
