New offside tech gets an FA Cup trial
Daily Mirror UK
|February 14, 2025
NEW semi-automated offside technology will be trialed in the FA Cup - and could be brought in to the Premier League this season.
Football bosses hope it will dramatically cut delays on VAR checks with the long-term plan to show video images on big screens in stadiums.
It comes just 24 hours after a lengthy VAR delay on Everton defender James Tarkowski's late leveller against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby. The Premier League, the Football Association and referees' body PGMOL have agreed to bring it in on a trial basis from the FA Cup fifth round. The hope is it works smoothly and reduces delays and that would enable them to use it in the Premier League potentially after the March international break.
