Lost for words over language barrier outrage

HOW many British expats in Dubai do you reckon speak Arabic? How many Brits living in Spain do you think speak Spanish?

What about Greece? How many Brits settling out there do you believe are able to converse in the local dialect?

Then ask yourself how many times you've been abroad and heard a fellow Brit mistake speaking more loudly - or patronisingly slowly - for an attempt at speaking that country’s language.

Maybe you've done it yourself.

I only ask because of the attempt, vomited up last week, to demonise migrants living over here. According to official statistics, 10% of this country’s residents who were born overseas speak little-to-no English.

Reported breathlessly on radio news bulletins and shotgunned across social media, the figure drew out the usual suspects, tails slithering from their slumber.
