EDDIE HOWE has warned Liverpool that the day Newcastle can compete with the Anfield giants on and off the pitch is fast approaching.

The Magpies proved in the 3-3 thriller at St James' Park earlier this season that at their best, they are a match for the elite.

And they head for Merseyside with their own Champions League prospects boosted by Sunday's dramatic 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest.

But history is weighted against them tonight - the Toon are winless in their last 28 away games at Anfield.

And that draw in December (Anthony Gordon scores Newcastle's second, below) halted a run of six straight defeats against the Reds.

Howe is undaunted and having sat in on a series of meetings in recent days with PIF chairman Yasir Al-Rumayan in attendance, he is confident the Saudi-rich club can emerge as rivals to the giants of English football.
