THE NEED TO HEED: AIDEX SHOWCASES TRUE SPIRIT OF SPORT

More than 350 athletes defied expectations and inspired a nation at the 32nd annual AIDEX meet, proving that true ability goes far beyond physical limits last Sunday at the Air Force ground in Colombo.

The event, organised by the Colombo Friend-in-Need Society (CFINS), was a powerful showcase of grit and determination.

From the youngest competitor, 3-year-old S. Lingesh, to the oldest, 86-year-old JLR Abeysiri, the day was packed with action. Athletes competed across more than 70 events, including track and field, archery, cycling and wheelchair races, all demonstrating the empowering impact of sports. The event was made possible by the incredible support of volunteer groups including MJF Dilmah, Colombo Medical College Students, Musaeus College Girl Guides, Deloitte, Colombo City and Night Runners and the Youth Council of the Colombo Friend-in-Need Society.

Former Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, a staunch advocate for empowering differently-abled individuals through sports, was a key figure at the event. He emphasised the importance of water sports for athletes with physical challenges.
