Unique perspective: Trinitian father's view on son playing for Royal

AS a proud old boy of Trinity College, with much of my family having a lineage to Trinity, I’ve always cherished the rich traditions and fierce rivalries that come with being a Trinitian. However, my experience has taken an unexpected turn as I now watch my son don the colours of Royal College and play against my alma mater.

The Bradby Shield is not just another rugby match; it is a celebration of history, tradition, and above all, true sportsmanship. This annual encounter has become a symbol of the deep-rooted rivalry and equally deep-rooted camaraderie between Trinity and Royal. It embodies more than just the competitive spirit; it represents an enduring legacy and bond between two of Sri Lanka’s most prestigious schools.

The Royal College—Trinity College rugby rivalry began in 1920, with the first match played on 31 July. The Bradby Shield was presented in 1945 by the then-departing Royal College Principal E.L. Bradby, to be awarded to the winner with the highest aggregate score over a two-legged rugby encounter.
