Omega Line: A Global Force in Apparel Manufacturing

June 02, 2025

Omega Line finds it origins in the Calzedonia Group, a relatively young enterprise, established in Verona, Italy in the late ‘80s. Sourcing its garments from Eastern European manufacturers at the time, producing only hosiery and socks in Italy and Croatia, after evaluating several other countries Calzedonia selected Sri Lanka as the first country to produce its’ own line of women’s lingerie. As a result, Omega Line was founded in 1999 and built its first factory at Sandalankawa in the North-Western province of Sri Lanka, as a subsidiary of Calzedonia Finanziaria, Luxembourg with Dott. Sandro Veronesi, at its helm.

While Omega Line remains the flagship entity, six additional factories have been established over the years. In 2002, Sirio was established in Badalgama, focussing on basic underwear and beachwear production, followed by a T-shirt specialised factory in 2005 under Omega Line. The acquisition of a factory in the Polgahawela Export Processing Zone led to the formation of Alpha Apparels in 2007 and this comprises two factories. The expansion continued in 2008 to Benji, manufacturing bra-cups in addition to underwear. By this time, Omega has already started manufactuting other components and accessories such as, underwire, tubes, Hook & Eyes, labels etc., thereby providing Omega Line control over most of the garment production.

In 2013, Omega Line expanded into Vavuniya, employing over 2,700 individuals and marking the largest investment in the north.

Collectively, these companies employ over 16,000 Sri Lankans with an annual production of and export volume exceeding 200 million garments, contributing significantly to the country’s export earnings, rural development, and industrial expertise. Despite economic challenges faced by the country, Omega achieved a group turnover of over $600 million in the previous year, with total investments exceeding $350 million across its four legal entities in the country.
