Sir Keir Starmer is accused of trying to use the Brianna Ghey tragedy to distract from his party's chaos.

The Labour leader finally confirmed he was ditching his £28billion flagship green spending plan yesterday - after months of speculation.

The controversial policy would have cost the average family £1,400 more in tax, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt warned.

But Sir Keir tried to divert attention from his latest U-turn by calling for the Prime Minister to apologise to the murdered transgender teen's family.

A Tory source said Mr Sunak would "never stoop so low" as to use Brianna's murder as a political issue, adding: "If Starmer wants to start using dirty politics he's got something coming to him."

The Prime Minister insisted yesterday that it was "sad and wrong" and "the worst of politics" to link comments he made about Sir Keir's U-turns to the teenager.

Mr Sunak accused his opponent of having difficulty in defining a woman during an attack on Labour Party policy in Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday.

Esther Ghey, the mother of Brianna, was visiting the House of Commons when Mr Sunak aimed the jibe at Sir Keir.

She was not in the public gallery at the time but arrived later.

The Labour leader responded by crying "shame" at the PM and called for an apology to the family.

Brianna's father Peter Spooner also asked Mr Sunak to apologise for his "degrading" and "absolutely dehumanising" remarks.

Mr Sunak has not done so but instead turned the heat on his rival.

On a visit to the South West yesterday, he said: "Like everyone, I was completely shocked by Brianna's case. To have your child taken from you in such awful circumstances is almost impossible to come to terms with.
