TRUMP: U.S. WILL ENSURE ANY DEAL WORKS

DONALD Trump has vowed America will ensure that a deal to stop the slaughter in Ukraine does work.

The US president greeted its leader Volodymyr Zelensky and insisted “the war is going to end” amid historic talks with European leaders in the White House.

He also refused to rule out putting US troops into Ukraine as part of any peace accord with its Russian invaders.

Speaking alongside President Zelensky, Mr Trump said: “The war is going to end. This gentleman wants it to end, Vladimir Putin wants it to end, I think the whole world is tired of it, and we're going to get it ended.” He signalled what may turn out to be the most dramatic shift in Washington's foreign policy since Moscow's 2022 attack.

As European leaders including Sir Keir Starmer watched on TV from elsewhere in the White House, Mr Trump said: "We'll let you know that, maybe later today" when pressed on if he would authorise an American military presence under a post-war agreement.

For Kyiv, guarantees of international security remain a linchpin of any settlement with the Kremlin.

Mr Trump went on: "They are the first line of defence, because they're there, Europe. But we're going to help them out. Also, we'll be involved", making clear that the US would not sit on the sidelines.

He declared: "If we can get to peace, it's going to work. I have no doubt about it." After an hour, Mr Trump's talks with Mr Zelensky ended and they joined European bigwigs for a photo. Attention then shifted to talks between the US chief and the European leaders.
