'Stop the floods' plea to protect food security

TORY MPs have urged ministers to act urgently to protect farmers from flooding.

Danny Kruger and Jerome Mayhew voiced fears of how deluges would affect food prices and said Labour's farming budget must be boosted in line with inflation.

Their call comes after England was hit by record rainfall in the 18 months to March.

Labour is set to create a Flood Resilience Taskforce, which will work with councils, communities and emergency services.

But Mr Mayhew, who represents Broadland and Fakenham, Norfolk, said: "As consumers feel the brunt of rising food prices, we must take long-term action.
